My name is Michael Abraham, owner of MITAGE CLEANERS. I got into the dry cleaning business back in the mid-80s so I could earn money while going to school. My brother and I started a company half as a hobby and half as a business. Back then, dry cleaning was a safe business to get into – the demand was high, and there were fewer cleaners around.
After a while, business picked up and things were good until the market became saturated with amateur cleaners and some who got into it for a quick buck as the dry cleaning gold rush ramped up. Things got ugly at times because it was a matter of survival of the fittest.
But I stayed the course, learned everything there was to learn about the business, remained patient and elected to do things differently by thinking outside the box. That meant operating 24/7 at one point in order to keep up with demand. Along the way, I learned the most valuable lesson of all – that the business I’m in is to serve people, to take pride in being a crucial part in the way they look and feel, not just as a means for economic success but also as a community leader. It was a priceless lesson that has served me right ever since.
Today, my dedicated team and I have reshaped our business and service model into a 100% eco-friendly cleaner. All the products we use are industry standard, environmentally safe, allergen-free and biodegradable. We follow State and Federal regulations to the letter and use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure safety, quality and efficiency in the service we deliver every day. That is probably one of the reasons why some now-successful startups such as BLACK TUX and RINSE trusted us in the early stages of their journey to serve as part of their launchpad.
